Game-Changing Cruise Ship Engineering
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd have ordered the fifth in their fleet of Celebrity Edge cruise ships with French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique, scheduled for delivery in 2024.
With the first in Celebrity’s Edge-class of cruise ships having recently completed her first Winter season, this glittering vessel combines innovative engineering, 3D technology and the culmination of world leading architects and designers, including Tom Wright, Nate Berkus and British Interior Designer Kelly Hoppen MBE who, with her clear vision and foresight, has created comfortable yet luxurious cabins, with Infinity Verandas which effortlessly transform from balcony to indoor lounge area.
New for the Edge series is the ‘floating’ Magic Carpet, the size of a tennis court, this amazing feat of engineering is the world’s first cantilevered floating platform. Able to travel the 13 stories of the ship’s side, switching from tender station, extended platform for destination pontoon to bar deck and viewing platform where passengers can enjoy incredible views.
Celebrity Edge was the first ship fully designed using 3D technology, enabling the innovative team to imagine the most refined ship before they even started construction.
The first phase of construction used the modern block system, where welders worked on individual block sections of the ship in the steel workshop, welding individual pieces of steel beneath them, before flipping them over and placing them upright in sequence, from bottom to top. The next phase was keel laying, where modular component parts of the ship were joined together for the first time, manoeuvred into place like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
The Edge is a masterpiece of beautiful communal spaces including The Retreat with its private pool deck, exclusive restaurant and luxurious spaces, where passengers can truly unwind, luxuriate in the space, see the world and be in the moment. The exquisite Grand Plaza with its circular bar for a more sociable experience and stunning chandelier sculpture with 3,280 ft of programmable LED lights which change with the mood. And a stunning window to the world, Eden, wrapped by 7,000 sq ft of glass, a non-conventional space where guests can connect with nature, plants and the sea.
There's terraced seating on the pool deck, for passengers to look out over the next destination on the port side before scaling the 6-metre-high replica martini-glasses to relax in a flying hot tub which sits at the top.
Celebrity Edge was named by the inspiring Malala Yousafzai, in an extraordinary ceremony towards the end of last year, a visionary spokeswoman who embodies the fearless spirit this game changing and visionary vessel represents.
