The arts and entertainment department of any cruise ship is among the most popular with guests. It’s here that they will find a wealth of shows, concerts and experiences to enjoy. As a member of the entertainment team, you’ll engage with and amuse guests, whether as a performer, stagehand or guest activities presenter.
The roles available in this extensive and varied category include: Entertainment Director, Entertainment Executive, Guest Activities Staff Member, Enrichment Personnel, Show Production Member, Dancer, Singer or Vocalist, Musician, Production Engineer or Technician, DJ, Musical Director, Compere, Art Auctioneer, Hostess or Host, Bar Manager and Bar Staff
Those working within this category will ensure customer engagement and enjoyment and strive to see that every guest is having a wonderful time while onboard.
As you’d expect, onboard entertainers must show excellent performance skills and be strong and confident in their chosen discipline. Dancers, musicians, singers and band members should have an outgoing personality, excellent communication skills and experience with working in a similar environment. Headshots and a showreel give your portfolio an advantage.
Senior staff members, technicians and engineers must hold a degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline. You should also have at least one to two years’ experience in your chosen field and a demonstrable knowledge of the cruise ship entertainment industry. Fluency in English and at least one other language is to your benefit.
If you’re applying for a customer-focused role such as host, bar staff or enrichment officer, then you’ll have skills and experience within the customer service industry and be an excellent communicator, patient individual and great organiser. Since you’ll be focusing on customer satisfaction and enjoyment, an outgoing personality is also a must.
Arts and entertainment staff members can expect salaries starting at £1,000 a month, although this will fluctuate depending upon the season and the number of shows or projects undertaken.
