Child Care

Childcare is of the utmost importance aboard any cruise ship. Parents travelling with young children will be keen to know that their little ones’ enjoyment has the same value as adult programmes and activities. Sometimes the hardest guests to please, children are an interesting and exciting group to work with. Job roles in this interactive department include:

Youth Activities Manager, Youth Staff Member and Counsellor, Crèche Leader, Crèche Worker, Babysitter and Performer

The key responsibilities of the youth activities manager include planning, organising and implementing an interesting programme of activities for children on the ship. This person liaises between youth workers and cruise entertainment directors to ensure that families are happy with the level of care and entertainment that’s on offer and handles any behavioural or disciplinary concerns that occur. Youth team members and counsellors must deliver activities and entertainment to the best of their ability while taking the enjoyment and welfare of the children into consideration.

Crèche workers and babysitters undertake similar duties to their land-based counterparts, including attending to the needs of all children in their care, offering interesting and engaging activities and entertainment and liaising with parents to offer an excellent level of service and care.

Most cruise liners ask that youth workers be at least 21 years of age, although this will depend upon the company’s discretion. You must have a relevant university degree and experience in working with children as well as a passion for delivering a high-quality service to the ship’s guests. Managers and coordinators should be organised and happy to work as mediators and negotiators whenever the need arises.

Youth workers are patient, flexible and approachable and must have an excellent grasp of the English language. You won’t be afraid to exert discipline whenever necessary, but you’ll have a calming and friendly demeanor from the outset. Anyone working with children must hold the relevant safety and first aid training and certificates, and you must agree to a DBS check before taking up your position.

Salary Expectations

Youth worker salaries start at around £800-£1,000 a month and will rise depending upon responsibilities and seniority.
